Baby Tooth Decay

April 29, 2013

Baby teeth are the foundation for the adult teeth to come in straight. Healthy baby teeth allow for better speech, nutrition and aesthetics when treated properly as if they were adult teeth. Children use their front teeth to tear food and back teeth to mash the food. Healthy baby teeth allow the permanent adult teeth to have a place to come in and provide better alignment.

Baby teeth should be cleaned with a washcloth and with a soft brush after each meal if they are still too young to use toothpaste. Cleaning the teeth will remove any plaque or food that will harm the teeth. Regular dental checkups should begin at about one year of age and instructions on brushing and oral hygiene should begin once the child is old enough to hold a toothbrush.

It has been found that tooth decay runs in families and a child can contract tooth decaying bacteria from their mother and this causes the formation of tooth decay. Tooth decay can also be caused by putting a child to sleep with a bottle filled with milk or juice. Children should not be given a bottle to sleep with because decay and malformation of the teeth will occur. Some people dip pacifiers in sugar or honey to help a fussy baby but in fact this creates acid attacks from bacteria. Since infants and toddlers do not receive adequate amounts of fluoride they have an increased risk for acid attack since the enamel becomes exposed. Children should be encouraged to drink from a cup by their first birthday and training cups should not be used for a long time. As usual sweets should be limited and regular dental visits should occur at a young age to ensure a healthy smile. Schedule your children dental appointments at 7 Day Dental today!
