Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder which interrupts normal sleeping patterns. Irregular breathing, memory loss, and snoring are just a few of the side effects associated with sleep apnea. Some patients also experience memory loss and feel that they are unable to get a full nights rest. Since they do not feel they have fully rested during the night they have difficulty concentrating on their daily tasks. Continuous symptoms of untreated sleep apnea lead to stress and may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Prolonged untreated sleep apnea will also develop problems with their lungs and blood pressure. Patients with sleep apnea will sometimes stop breathing during their sleep for a few seconds or minutes which places greater stressors on their body and its organs.
Those individuals who have already been diagnosed with sleep apnea may be using a CPAP machine. Most patients using the CPAP machine feel apprehensive towards it since it is inconvenient and uncomfortable. This machine allows the airway to avoid becoming obstructed and permits oxygen to flow readily throughout the night. There is also another option known as an Oral Appliance Therapy which is an alternative for patients who struggle to use the CPAP. It is a different type of appliance which is more comfortable for the patient and allows the airway to remain open. Sleep apnea is a topic that is rarely discussed but it is certainly just as impacting towards ones health just as other risk factors.
